There are many things that we serve up on our tables each day that don’t equal nutritional value in any capacity. Even with the best intentions, the additives in today’s’ foods are just bad for us. There’s no better way to put it—the truth is that we need to eat better and be more mindful. One of the worst additives that appears in far too many foods is most definitely high fructose corn syrup. What is it about this particular additive that makes it so bad? There are several reasons why you want to steer your family away from this food additive. You should also be aware that it is found in far more foods than you might think. So what makes it so very bad?
It Leads to Obesity
The number one reason why you and your family should avoid high fructose corn syrup is that it can and will lead to obesity. First and foremost, this food is found in many processed foods and this is problematic. Secondly it lurks beneath the surface of seemingly healthy foods that we load ourselves up with. The makeup of this food additive is a whole lot of fat and that in turn contributes to making us fat. At first this may not show up, but over time the individual eating more and more high fructose corn syrup becomes obese. This is something that can be easily avoided if there is a careful eye given to reading labels. Though some foods are quite obvious, others may not be. If you don’t suspect it then you may be in for a very unpleasant surprise. The more of this substance you eat, the better chance you have of becoming obese.
It Builds Up In Your Body
Since high fructose corn syrup is a mass produced and synthetic substance, it is considered to be foreign to your body. Therefore when you consume it, the body simply doesn’t know what to do with it. Therefore as you consume it, the high fructose corn syrup tends to build up in a part like the liver. Not only is this problematic as it can lead to further health problems, but it can also contribute to making you feel hungry. When the body eats natural sugars or the right type, it is turned into insulin and the body processes it properly. When you eat foods that contain high fructose corn syrup, then it will linger in the body and therefore make you feel hungry faster. This all contributes to obesity and further health problems down the road.
It Can Lead to Major Health Problems
A child that eats a great deal of high fructose corn syrup as a child will have a great likelihood of developing health problems later on in life. This is due in large part to the obesity issue which will cause an individual to be more likely to develop conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. It also means that there are poor eating habits and that the body isn’t getting the nutrients that it requires. This all spells trouble and means that health problems will likely be present later on in life.
